Going back to the beginning... We where staying in the expensive side of the island. Not that there is anything non-expensive in any of the Hawai'i islands, but Kailua-Kona is the vacation, resort, multi-million dollar locale. It's also where the political center of the island has been before the U.S.A. came along and swallowed up the islands. Strictly speaking on the second day there, since we arrived late afternoon Wednesday, we did some errands and walked around town. What better way to start this set of photos than with the terribly numerous, and yet very hard to find, gecko's of Hawai'i.
There are many differences one notices from being in the tropics but there's one glaring difference one sees... The sun goes down fast, which makes for a stunning sunset experience. In order below are: the start of the sunset from the shore of Kailua Bay, a progression of a few minutes (about 4) of the sun just going below the horizon, and last a panorama taken while eating dinner next to the water at Huggos.
Moving back to full daylight... Walking around town we went to the two churches on Ali'i drive, and the mostly permanent farmers market there.
During the days there, since we had to go back to sleep in the resort, we ran into various unexpected events. One was a regional canoe race:
And last back to the sea, here's a picture of the break water on Kailua Bay full of 'a'ama (rock crabs) and ha-uke-uke (helmet urchin). If you look closely you'll eventually notice there are four crabs in the picture.
Update: Oops, they are so hard to see sometimes... It's actually five crabs in the picture.
